Since Mew can only be obtained in generation 1 games and it's hard to find a place that doesn't tell you to use Strength on the truck in Vermillion, I figured it would be appropriate to post this here. ;) It may sound confusing, but it's actually pretty easy - I've caught myself a couple of Mews this way.

First, restart your game and play up to the point where you get HM02/Fly. Along the way, make sure NOT to fight the Youngster on Route 24 (the fourth after the bridge, he's facing north) and the Gambler on Route 8 (east of the gate to Saffron City, facing towards the Underground).

Go to Route 8 and stand in front of the door to the Underground. I suggest you safe your game at this point, so you can try again if anything goes wrong. Step forward and immediately press Start. Order a pokémon to Fly to Cerulean. The Gambler should see you just before you take off.

Once you're in Cerulean, go to Route 24 and find the Youngster. You need to make him walk up to you, or else the game will freeze. Defeat him, and Fly to Lavender Town. Head to Route 8. The menu will pop up, simply press B to exit it. Walk into the grass and get your pokéballs ready!

Mew will be at Level 7, so it should not be hard to catch - and be careful not to accidentally defeat it, because you'll have to start over. As far as I've noticed, it's impossible to catch Mew with a regular pokéball, because it will keep missing. And if I remember correctly, it keeps escaping from Ultra balls; a Great ball seemed to work best.

If you accidentally do defeat the Gambler earlier on in the game, don't worry; there are countless other trainers you can use to counter this glitch. As long as the trainer sees you at the same moment it scrolls onto the screen, it should work (I haven't tried, though). Just make sure you return to the same route this trainer was in. However, you do need the Youngster on Route 24, because he is the only one who triggers Mew.

Good luck! (X-posted to pokemon.)

The first time I found Mew I immediately threw like 20 pokéballs at it and it kept doding them, so I figured it was ~impossible~ and wrote that down in my pokémon notebook. x)

I used to back in the GSC days, but I think I threw it away; it was tiny and disorganized. I had a whole list of the TMs and which apricorn would turn into what kind of ball... *nostlagic sigh*
